While 44% of men in Ireland use advanced digital skills in their daily jobs, only 18% of women do. Advanced Digital Skills are high level tasks such as programming, AI &amp; Machine Learning. A particular concern raised was the gap is largest not amongst women in my own age group (50+) but younger women. The gender gaps are larger and less well explainable amongst those under 35.</p><p>So, the question is why are women under 35 less likely than men to be using these tools? In an earlier article I spoke about the sheer joy and optimism of the days of the early internet and then how this has soured in recent years.</p><p>Having worked in technology for over two decades, I can&#8217;t help wondering whether part of the answer lies in the lived experience many young women have had of the digital world itself.</p><p>To be 35 now means you were 13 when Facebook launched, 16 when the first new iPhone came out and 19 when Instagram landed. You have been surrounded by technology most of your life. Some of it has been exciting and fun and a way to connect. But a lot of it has been darker.</p><p>To be 35 and under now means:</p><p>41% of you would have received unwanted sexual images <a href="#_ftn1"><span>[1]</span></a></p><p>Almost half of you would have received them when you were under the age of 18 (completely disgusting).</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!hVjh!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fa427b618-b6ec-4280-90a2-17c2a49970b2_547x365.jpeg" data-component-name="Image2ToDOM"><div class="image2-inset"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!hVjh!,w_424,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fa427b618-b6ec-4280-90a2-17c2a49970b2_547x365.jpeg 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!hVjh!,w_848,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fa427b618-b6ec-4280-90a2-17c2a49970b2_547x365.jpeg 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!hVjh!,w_1272,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fa427b618-b6ec-4280-90a2-17c2a49970b2_547x365.jpeg 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!hVjh!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fa427b618-b6ec-4280-90a2-17c2a49970b2_547x365.jpeg 1456w" sizes="100vw"><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!hVjh!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fa427b618-b6ec-4280-90a2-17c2a49970b2_547x365.jpeg" width="547" height="365" data-attrs="{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/a427b618-b6ec-4280-90a2-17c2a49970b2_547x365.jpeg&quot;,&quot;srcNoWatermark&quot;:null,&quot;fullscreen&quot;:null,&quot;imageSize&quot;:null,&quot;height&quot;:365,&quot;width&quot;:547,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:null,&quot;bytes&quot;:null,&quot;alt&quot;:&quot;24,400+ Girl Looking At Iphone Stock Photos, Pictures &amp; Let&#8217;s look at what delights this has brought in the short time since LLMs came into our consciousness:</p><p>The number of deepfake videos online had increased by 550% since 2019.<a href="#_ftn3"><span>[3]</span></a></p><p>98% of all deepfake videos online were pornographic and nonconsensual.</p><p>99% of the individuals targeted in deepfake pornography were women.</p><p>It now takes less than 25 minutes and costs $0 to create a 60-second deepfake pornographic video of anyone using just one clear face image.</p><p>And most disturbing of all? 74% of deepfake pornography users don&#8217;t feel guilty about it.</p><p>Before we criticise younger women for not embracing AI, perhaps we should consider what the digital revolution has actually looked like from their perspective.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" This was just not new tech it was a new way of being. Gillian Tett captures it so well in her book &#8220;The Silo Effect&#8221; a senior Facebook executive said at the time;</p><p><em>&#8220;We want to be anti- Sony, anti-Microsoft- we look at companies like that and see what we don&#8217;t want to become&#8221;.</em></p><p>To be working in tech was to be in the cool gang. But people grew up and scale came at a price. In 2015 the original Google motto changed from &#8220;Don&#8217;t be Evil&#8221; to &#8220;Do the right thing&#8221;; somewhere along the way defining what exactly not being evil meant became more complicated.</p><p>An incredible insight into that world is Chaos Monkeys by Antonio Garcia Martinez. I wrote a pretty wide eyed <a href="https://irishtechnews.ie/chaos-monkeys-by-antonio-garcia-martinez-reviewed-facebook-insider-stories-and-more/amp/">review</a> of that for Irish Tech News back in 2017. A sharp, witty writer it is a really funny book and what I took away from it was: <br><br><em>&#8220;They (Facebook) take users data far more seriously than I ever realized and for the most part come across as really smart people working very thoughtfully on trying to create a new type of organization.&#8221;</em></p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 Sarah Wyndham Clarke&#8217;s also excellent book (if you have not read it please stop scrolling and get a copy of it now!) details all of this in &#8220;Careless People&#8221;.</p><p>Another insider story, very well told but one of the tales which stopped me in my tracks was this one. An advertising pitch deck was made by the Australian team. In it they outlined how they target young people when they are vulnerable. Advertisers were offered the opportunity to target 13&#8211;17-year-olds at moments when they felt &#8220;worthless&#8221;, &#8220;insecure&#8221; and &#8220;like a failure&#8221;. A practical application? A beauty company targeting a girl once she deletes a selfie intuiting that at that moment she is not feeling happy within herself and can therefore be targeted for sale. And that&#8217;s without even mentioning body confidence and eating disorders.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" I know. Inconceivable now. When messages need to be relayed companywide a memo was printed out and placed on everyone&#8217;s desk. As I worked for Guinness in Italy at the time the memo was printed in two languages; English and Italian. (For the record I am 52 not 92).</p><p>A year later I moved to Germany, it would have been around 1998 and the internet had started to creep in. I worked in a little satellite office across from the main office and it was deemed not important enough to bring the cable across the road so we soldiered on with our memos and A4 diaries large enough to whack a burglar with. My desk had a landline phone I used constantly and a brick of a mobile phone I used rarely. There was a pub in the office (wellness had not been invented yet) and after work drinks were the norm. Life was pretty much completely analogue.</p><p></p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!9pUD!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F6c295e8c-cf0f-4114-bbb4-98dba2222b80_450x316.jpeg" data-component-name="Image2ToDOM"><div class="image2-inset"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!9pUD!,w_424,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F6c295e8c-cf0f-4114-bbb4-98dba2222b80_450x316.jpeg 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!9pUD!,w_848,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F6c295e8c-cf0f-4114-bbb4-98dba2222b80_450x316.jpeg 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!9pUD!,w_1272,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F6c295e8c-cf0f-4114-bbb4-98dba2222b80_450x316.jpeg 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!9pUD!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F6c295e8c-cf0f-4114-bbb4-98dba2222b80_450x316.jpeg 1456w" sizes="100vw"><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!9pUD!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F6c295e8c-cf0f-4114-bbb4-98dba2222b80_450x316.jpeg" width="450" height="316" data-attrs="{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/6c295e8c-cf0f-4114-bbb4-98dba2222b80_450x316.jpeg&quot;,&quot;srcNoWatermark&quot;:null,&quot;fullscreen&quot;:null,&quot;imageSize&quot;:null,&quot;height&quot;:316,&quot;width&quot;:450,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:null,&quot;bytes&quot;:null,&quot;alt&quot;:&quot;Does 'Mad Men' make you mad?&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:null,&quot;type&quot;:null,&quot;href&quot;:null,&quot;belowTheFold&quot;:true,&quot;topImage&quot;:false,&quot;internalRedirect&quot;:null,&quot;isProcessing&quot;:false,&quot;align&quot;:null,&quot;offset&quot;:false}" class="sizing-normal" alt="Does 'Mad Men' make you mad?" title="Does 'Mad Men' make you mad?" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!9pUD!,w_424,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F6c295e8c-cf0f-4114-bbb4-98dba2222b80_450x316.jpeg 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!9pUD!,w_848,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F6c295e8c-cf0f-4114-bbb4-98dba2222b80_450x316.jpeg 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!9pUD!,w_1272,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F6c295e8c-cf0f-4114-bbb4-98dba2222b80_450x316.jpeg 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!9pUD!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F6c295e8c-cf0f-4114-bbb4-98dba2222b80_450x316.jpeg 1456w" sizes="100vw" loading="lazy"></picture><div class="image-link-expand"><div class="pencraft pc-display-flex pc-gap-8 pc-reset"><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container restack-image"><svg role="img" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 20 20" fill="none" stroke-width="1.5" stroke="var(--color-fg-primary)" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"><g><title></title><path d="M2.53001 7.81595C3.49179 4.73911 6.43281 2.5 9.91173 2.5C13.1684 2.5 15.9537 4.46214 17.0852 7.23684L17.6179 8.67647M17.6179 8.67647L18.5002 4.26471M17.6179 8.67647L13.6473 6.91176M17.4995 12.1841C16.5378 15.2609 13.5967 17.5 10.1178 17.5C6.86118 17.5 4.07589 15.5379 2.94432 12.7632L2.41165 11.3235M2.41165 11.3235L1.5293 15.7353M2.41165 11.3235L6.38224 13.0882"></path></g></svg></button><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container view-image"><svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="none" stroke="currentColor" stroke-width="2" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" class="lucide lucide-maximize2 lucide-maximize-2"><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line></svg></button></div></div></div></a></figure></div><p>From where we are sitting now a lot of that seems quite attractive. But there was a lot wrong with it too. Work was incredibly hierarchical in a way that simply does not exist anymore. Nearly all the managers were male and who you knew was an essential part of getting on or even getting in in the first place. It was not glamorous like Mad Men but it was warrens of little offices and secretaries sitting outside.</p><p>Today the open plan offices and exposed ceiling looks are so ubiquitous they have become a total cliche. But back then they really were kind of shocking - they announced a new way of working, far removed from the previously prized mahogany desks and filing cabinets of before. To walk into one of these open plans, light filled offices was a joy.</p><p>When I worked in Guinness I wore cufflinks on my shirts. It was very much traditional suits with skirts, tights and heels. At the time our suits were nearly always grey or black with a pink shirt if you wanted to be daring. We looked uniformly awful. When I moved to tech I remember being genuinely taken aback to see a senior executive walking the floor in shorts (it was Dublin but he was Californian to be fair). There was a lightness in it. Runners instead of heels. T-shirts instead of cufflinks. What you knew rather than who you knew.</p><p>But over and above all of that the reason I moved into Tech &#8211; and why so many others did as well &#8211; was the genuine optimism and belief that we were making the world a better place. We were at the forefront of a new society one which was going to be open, prosperous and shared. The barriers to knowledge were going to be broken down. The old hierarchies would disappear and citizens would be empowered. This was a new frontier and creativity was going to flourish. We really believed.</p><p>The internet revolution was real. So much good came from it. And yet, and yet.. the joy is nearly all gone. The optimism has evaporated. When we talk about AI there is some excitement but there is mainly anxiety and fear.</p><p>Why is that? Will be talking about that next week.</p><p class="button-wrapper" data-attrs="{&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://ciaragarvan.substack.com/subscribe?&quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;Subscribe now&quot;,&quot;action&quot;:null,&quot;class&quot;:null}" data-component-name="ButtonCreateButton"><a class="button primary" href="https://ciaragarvan.substack.com/subscribe?"><span>Subscribe now</span></a></p><p></p><p></p><div class="captioned-button-wrap" data-attrs="{&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://ciaragarvan.substack.com/p/but-first-remember-the-joy?utm_source=substack&utm_medium=email&utm_content=share&action=share&quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;Share&quot;}" data-component-name="CaptionedButtonToDOM"><div class="preamble"><p class="cta-caption">Thanks for reading The Great Career Reset !
